Patchwork IT Tearing at The Seams

Organizations are grappling with an exponential increase in the number of applications and continued database sprawl.

Retaking control will be crucial to tackle headwinds in 2023

The pandemic saw organizations of all shapes and sizes rush to enable remote work in the public cloud, cobbling together a hodgepodge of IT solutions to fix holes in the roof. But in their haste to make things ‘work’, they have created new challenges. The unfettered use of cloud has seen costs spiral and reining them in is hard. Continued database sprawl is also a major issue. Moving ahead with patchwork IT will only make things worse.

Applications are redefining infrastructure needs. Organizations are starting to acknowledge that the cloud is an operating model, not merely a destination for the explosion in the number of apps they need. This is a step toward remedying the piecemeal solutions they may have in place.

As the pandemic recedes, we have a new adversary to tackle. Macroeconomic uncertainty is leaving customers walking a fine line: they are now trying to determine how to build robust, adaptive organizations and scale, while controlling costs.

Strained Systems

The temptation would be to stick to the status quo and see how things play out. But many of the technologies that saw us through the pandemic are no longer fit for purpose and will not support the ongoing proliferation of apps and databases that organizations are seeing.

The temptation would be to stick to the status quo, the patchwork IT solutions they may have in place, and see how things play out. But in reality, many of the technologies that saw us through the pandemic are buckling at the knees, no longer fit for purpose and will not support the explosion in the number of apps and databases that businesses need. The patchwork cannot hold indefinitely.

The more stress that organizations put on these systems, the more their costs and liabilities escalate. The patchwork cannot hold indefinitely. Changing familiar infrastructure is always daunting, but failure to act will result in inevitable decline.

An expanding universe of apps calls for a new approach to data management. The spread of apps and databases across multiple clouds and environments means that many organizations lack full visibility of where everything resides and the capabilities to manage it.

There’s no denying the explosion of apps, and it’s no longer feasible to rely on the same approach to data management. Having apps and databases across multiple clouds and environments means that many companies don’t have good visibility of where everything resides or the capabilities to manage the sprawl.

This poses security, governance and operational concerns. It’s time to get practical and reclaim control of the situation, and hybrid multicloud is where the journey begins.

Hybrid multicloud is a cloud deployment model from which to rebalance apps and data. It enables visibility and easy management of their clouds, both public and private, setting up an organization with the flexibility it needs to tackle an uncertain future.

Getting Ahead of The Curve

In recent months, we have seen numerous organizations prioritize digital transformation and data center modernization, looking beyond their makeshift use of public cloud and databases during the pandemic to settle on a more permanent and stable solution.

In Korea, Nutanix helped Shinsegae Group, a retail conglomerate, realize continuous and error-free operations across its group of companies, even in promotional seasons, supporting up to 10 times more business transactions than usual.

Since adding Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) on AWS, Straive, a Singapore-based content technology company, can now move workloads from on-premise infrastructure to the AWS public cloud and vice versa easily. Personnel can access the applications they need to do their work more quickly.

In another NC2 on AWS example, Sapporo City in Japan was able to reduce IT complexity and operational burden significantly, enabling seamless connectivity between its on-premise infrastructure and AWS.

Since moving to the Nutanix Cloud Platform, Jhaveri Securities in India can now deploy applications 60 percent faster, rolling out new capabilities quicker than ever. Employees are working more efficiently because of an improvement in the performance of software programs following the switch to Nutanix.

Marist College Canberra took infrastructure management out of its to-do list and now has more bandwidth for strategic projects. The IT team is empowered to try out ideas for new services on-the-fly because they can spin up development environments quickly with Nutanix.

These and numerous other examples underscore the value for organizations in a unified environment, visibility across all clouds, and leveraging automation. In a world where external threats and general unpredictability abound, a strong foundation is critical. It is time to discard their patchwork IT and find more permanent, scalable solutions that will stand the test of time.
