Dr. Chawapol Jariyawiroj, President, Huawei Technologies Thailand, explained the trend of carbon neutrality and the technological needs to achieve net-zero emissions: “At the present day, if we look at the broader landscape, carbon emissions primarily stem from three key sources. The first and biggest source is from the old technology currently utilized for energy production. The second source arises from manufacturing sectors, consistently emitting a significant portion of CO2. The third source is attributed to the transportation sector. Looking at the technology used for energy production in Thailand, we can see positive changes over the past few years, marked by an increasingly deployment of clean energy utilization. Also, Thai government agencies have been collectively supporting the use of technology for sustainability. The Green Technology embraced initially in Thailand is Smart PV, and its substantial growth is evident. Smart PV electricity generation can be found in both power plants and households, with a high potential for further expansion. The second technology is the Smart Grid, which is an application of advanced technologies to facilitate the smarter and more effective use of electrical energy. Lastly, intelligence digital technologies have been implemented to reduce carbon emissions in operational processes through digital transformation and to generate cleaner energy.”
He elaborated that the technology industry is responsible for only 2% of the overall global carbon footprint. At the same time, the tech industry contributes to over 15-20% of the carbon footprint reduction in many industries. And in 2030, the ICT sector is poised to contribute to the reduction of 12,100 tons of carbon emissions on an industrial scale.
“There are three primary factors to help accelerate the adoption of Green Technology in Thailand. Firstly, the government’s regulatory framework and policies need to be aligned with the new net-zero standards, while facilitating the adoption of advanced technology to enhance energy production in the private sector. Secondly, the deployment of Green Technology requires capital support from both government and private sectors. Current initiatives include financial loans for solar power solutions provided by the banking sector and a budget provision among corporations to shift towards a green enterprise. Lastly, there are also business-related factors, which stem from external market factors such as carbon credit or business negotiation,” he added.

Implementing Huawei’s cloud technology can improve processes, broaden market penetration, and consequently reduce the carbon footprint arising from technology use and business operations. Furthermore, the surge in the ‘Work from Home’ trend has been propelling the adoption of cloud technology in Thailand, simultaneously attracting more investment into the country. Huawei has invested in three cloud-based local data centers in Thailand, while actively collaborating with both global and local partners to establish a robust cloud ecosystem. Similarly, the company aims to distinguish itself through their emission reduction initiatives.
Likewise, Huawei’s Smart PV offers a solution for clean-energy production, with an increasing number of industries adopting solar power technology. Real estate developers are progressively incorporating solar panels into their construction plans. Huawei offers the 1+4+X FusionSolar solution, which focuses on energy storage, power use and safety. This advanced solution derives from a substantial investment in Huawei’s R&D which exceeding USD$23 billion in 2022, resulting in innovative and efficient technology poised to make a significant impact by reducing the carbon footprint for various industries.
