Energy Planning Policy Office (EPPO), under Ministry of Energy of Thailand (MOE), in collaboration with Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co. Ltd. today launched the Thailand Digital Energy Policy & Planning Workshop, themed “Accelerate Digital Energy and ICT Transformation Pathway towards Carbon Neutrality and Contribute to Thailand BCG Economy”. The aim of this workshop was to share knowledge and best practices in digital energy transformation with over 80 policy makers, scholars, and technology experts in Thailand and China.
This workshop, held both virtually and in Bangkok, is in response to Thailand’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality in line with government policy. At the World Leaders Summit of the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 26), H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-Cha, Prime Minister of Thailand, emphasized that, Thailand was among the first nations to submit the Long-Term Low GHG Emissions Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) in line with the Paris Agreement, aiming at reaching carbon neutrality in 2050, and Net Zero Emissions in or before 2065. As Thailand moves towards this goal, the public and private sectors are closely working together to facilitate green ICT infrastructure construction and energy transformation.
Mr. Veerapat Kiatfuengfoo Deputy Director General of Energy Planning Policy Office, Ministry of Energy, highlighted the digital energy at the event: “The transformation in ICT is driving the energy sector into the digital era. This will accelerate Thailand’s BCG Economy towards the carbon neutrality and net zero greenhouse gas emissions goals which directly related to our policy and strategy. The policy direction of the National Energy Policy 2022 aims to promote green energy investment in the energy sector as follows: 1) increase proportion of new electricity generation with not less than 50% of renewable energy, 2) adjust the usage of transport sector to green electricity through electrical vehicles (EV) in line with the 30@30 policy; 3) increase energy usage efficiency to more than 30% and 4) restructure the energy industry to support the trend of energy transition according to the 4D1E guidelines.”
Zhao Daiqing, Chief Researcher, Energy Strategy& Low-Carbon Development Center of Guangzhou Energy Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, shared best practices about China 30/60 Carbon Neutrality Target, the Policy Research, Development Path, and Top Planning Design, Practice Experience in Greater Bay Area. According to her, “The Chinese Academy of Sciences Guangzhou Institute of Energy is positioned to research renewable energy, energy conservation, environmental protection, and related strategies and industrial policies. We hope to joint research policies to transform the energy industry with Thailand’s industry think tanks and policymakers.”.
The energy industry will enter into the digital era because of the rapid development of digital economy and there are challenges of energy digitalization and digital economy development. The entire industry needs to provide high importance to increase investment in digital energy infrastructure which is the foundation of the digital world. During this workshop, experts from Huawei have shared insights and cases regarding the role and application of ICT technology in energy industry.
Abel Deng, CEO of Huawei Technologies (Thailand), stressed in the welcome remarks that “the energy transition faces enormous challenges but also brings massive business opportunities. It is the largest industry in the next 30 years, we will continue to use the most advanced technology and rich industrial experience to help Thailand achieve energy transition and carbon neutrality and will share our expertise and practices with the Ministry of Energy of Thailand to support and being a reliable partner for Thailand’s carbon-neutral roadmap”.
“Carbon neutrality has become a global consensus and mission, and technological innovation will play a central role in tackling climate change and achieving carbon emission reduction goals. Huawei Digital Energy is committed to integrating digital technology and power electronics technology, developing clean energy and energy digitization, promoting the energy revolution, and building a green and beautiful future.”, said by Dr. Fang Liangzhou, Vice President and CMO of Huawei Digital Power.
Towards Thailand’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality, energy digitalization is an inevitable trend. Innovative integration of digital and energy technologies enables intelligent management of power generation, power transmission, power distribution, power storage and power consumption, substantially improving energy efficiency.
